We built our house and had the option to go with anything we wanted! We chose the sidekicks and thought we would be in love. We have had them now for 5 years and they are terrible. About 2 months after we moved in we started experiencing all kinds of problems. The fridge is constantly leaking. The condenser unit in the back is always having to be pull apart, deiced and cleaned. I'd say we have to do this about 3-4 times a year. The fridge makes a sizzling sound to forewarn you that water damage is imminent if you fail to fix the condenser, at which point we have to go fast and begin pulling things apart. Both units wobble like crazy (something we have hired to fix several times but to no avail) so now we just have to have a shiny under the wheels. The refrigerator light was having "mechanical problems" and was failing to turn off, therefore it was keeping our food warmer than it should. The door doesn't seal very well. The ice cubes on the ice maker for the fridge never fall into the bin, therefore we are always having to clean out all of the ice that falls everywhere throughout. Both units, although beautiful, are terribly built and even though I had a warranty plan Whirlpool only covered service for someone to come out and put a bandaid on the issue. Since then we are out of warranty and we now just have to do this ourselves. I never realized I was going to be buying a fridge/freezer that required such a terrible amount of maintenance just to keep them working.

Had a bad vibration noise and found one of the tubes near compressor not secured and rattling on cabinet. Then unit quit cooling and needed defrost thermostat replaced. Also the stainless finish on door doesn’t match the stainless door on the matching Whirlpool Sidekick Freezer.

We recently moved into a new house. The place had been completely remodeled about six months before we moved in and was vacant. One of the features of the house was this product and after only being here for ten months we are having to pay $400 to replace the control box and thermistors, not to mention $150 worth of food! The fridge was bought a few months before we moved in and is barely over a year and we were told it was out of warranty. That is not acceptable. My rental property has a fridge that I bought new in 2003 and its NEVER had an issue! I wont buy Whirlpool again!

I like the interior layout of both the freezer/refrigerator and the sleek exterior but they aren’t level with each other. Freezer tilts to an angle and has started a buzzing sound. I’m concerned that the freezer is already going out.

I bought the SideKicks set when we build our new house. I love the look, but with in a few months we had to have the fridge worked on. Then next came the freezer. both were "repaired" but back down again, and again. Finally the freezer seems to be working but the fridge is down again. We had to buy an additional standard fridge/freezer unit to use each time to keep from throwing away yet another full fridge of food. I'm currently looking for replacement units that will fit the custom built in area.

We bought this 2 years ago. It worked great for a year and a half then the refrigerator stopped cooling. We were told we only have a 1 year warranty. So far we’ve replaced the thermostat and fan. Now, we have to replace compressor. I will never purchase from this company again!

Fridge stopped working after two years. Out of warranty so Whirlpool is no help. If you do a simple google search you’ll continue to see the same problem - works one day then it just stops cooling. Same thing happened with us. Repairman believed it was a leak in the evaporator. Repaired evaporator, replaced dead control computer and replaced coolant. Worked again for 48hrs but seems to be running into the same problem. No longer cooling. Future customers, read and strongly consider these reviews. You can see these bad reviews date back for years. Same problem on the same machine and the manufacturer will not help you since the machine is able to last long enough to get through the warranty.

I bought this set 9 yr ago when we built a new home. The freezer needed repair 2 mo after we moved in, the repair failed and replacement was offered under warranty. Freezer had been working fine since then. Refrigerator required extensive repair after warranty coverage no longer was available. About two years after that very expensive repair, it stopped working altogether. Called repairman, and paid for another repair which did not fix the fridge. Called Whirlpool to explain the situation and spoke to two different people who simply kept repeating we cannot do anything for you if it is out of warranty. Their only alternative was to schedule another repair at our expense of course. After already spending about $1,000 for two prior repairs, we were then faced with replacement. Big problem. New refrigerator is styled very differently than the freezer, so both units had to be purchased for esthetic reasons. Could not purchase another brand due to available physical space in the kitchen. So we were left with few options. New fridge was delivered, and that same afternoon strange sounds were noted. Sounds just like Darth Vader! Thankfully, we called Lowes and they special ordered a replacement fridge. Meanwhile, the new matching freezer was delivered, along with an ice maker. Had to call for repair within a week as it was not making ice. There was a kink in the water line, and it is now working after repair. So presently, the freezer is fine. New fridge should be delivered at the end of the week. Fingers crossed for a decent fridge this time. Seems like after we have purchased four Whirlpool units in less than 10 years, we should be able to assume some reliability. Very disappointed in Whirlpool's response to this dilemma. Don't just factor in money we have spent on the units, but the spoiled food, the time lost from work for repairs and deliveries. Very inconvenient. Needless to say, we felt compelled to purchase the 5 year extended warranty this time! Trying to be optimistic in hopes that both units will prove to be dependable. So far, we are not off to a smooth start. We shall see.

I ordered this for my new home looking forward to the luxury of an abundance of space. While there IS an abundance of space, we have twice lost ALL of the food in the freezer unit. The freezer quit working after warranty expired (as happened to several others noted in these comments). We had a repairman here who replaced the computer. Then he said he needed to order another part. The freezer again worked well for a few months, now its quit again. I almost fear mentioning the refrigerator has not been a problem at all for fear of jinxing it, but the freezer is NOT up to Whirlpools usual quality. We have not only spent quite a bit of money on repair, and now will have to fork out more in repairs, but the hundreds of dollars worth of food we had to throw out on top of it really hurts. We are retired and assumed this unit would last our lifetime. NOT!!!!!
